Presbyterian Ladies’ College Hockey Field Resurface Completed — With a Major Sustainability Boost

Grassports Australia has recently completed the resurfacing of the major school hockey field at Presbyterian Ladies’ College — a field we originally constructed more than 13 years ago. The upgrade replaces the long-serving synthetic turf with a state-of-the-art, Australian Made Poligras Eco HT surface.

What makes this project stand out is the strong sustainability focus applied right from the beginning. At the commencement of works, Grassports partnered with RE4ORM Recycling to ensure the old synthetic turf was removed, transported and processed in an environmentally responsible way.

The RE4ORM team carefully removed the existing turf and transported it back to their headquarters, where it underwent rigorous mechanical separation. The turf was broken down into its component materials — including backing, yarn and infill — which were then processed and repurposed into new construction and landscaping products. This approach closes the loop on synthetic turf lifecycle management and ensures the surface avoids landfill entirely.

By incorporating RE4ORM recycling technology, the project successfully:
• Reduced waste to landfill
• Recovered valuable raw materials for reuse
• Supported more sustainable sports facility construction
• Aligned with international best practice for turf recycling

The official recycling certificate for the project reported:
• 190 tonnes of turf recovered (collected while very wet)
• 70.87 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions saved compared with landfill disposal
• Materials recovered included 135 tonnes of sand, 22 tonnes of plastic (PE/PP) and 33 tonnes of wastage/evaporation

Alongside the recycling process, Grassports completed a full scope of resurfacing works, including:
• Rectifying minor issues with the existing shock pad (which remained undamaged during removal)
• Patching the base where required
• Supplying and installing Poligras Eco HT synthetic hockey grass
• Installing new line marking for:
• 1 full-size hockey pitch
• 4 junior hockey D’s
• 12 tennis courts

The completed project now provides PLC with a world-class playing surface, while also showcasing Grassports‘ ongoing commitment to delivering high-performance sports surfaces through environmentally responsible and forward-thinking construction practices.

Having also resurfaced the junior sports courts alongside the hockey pitch works, we’re proud to continue supporting the school’s sporting facilities. We can’t wait to build on our long-standing relationship with PLC and sincerely thank them for their continued trust and commitment to Grassports Australia.
